What to buy in Peru - Top 5 Peruvian Gifts in Lima

11/13/2015

What to buy in Peru is a topic that comes up frequently with our guests during Lima food tours. It's important to pick out unique keepsakes, souvenirs and gifts that represent the local styles and flavors so that the essence of the trip lives on. Besides a lovely bottle of Pisco or the token chullo (Andean stocking cap) and pan pipes, we offer you five options that are sure to bring back memories of an unforgettable trip to Peru.

1. Silver Jewelry and Accesories

As a big mining country, beautiful silver pieces abound: earrings, necklaces, rings, picture frames, purses, etc. In Lima, there are entire streets dedicated to the trade of precious metal products, like Avenida La Paz in Miraflores. One jeweller that has gorgeous designs and several shops around the city is Ilaria. For more boutique options, you can check out Dedalo in Barranco, which has a section that features local, Peruvian designers with dainty and funky pieces alike.

2. Pink Salt

Why use your boring, everyday table salt when you can use pink salt? From the flats near in Maras, the salt obtains its pink hue by passing through rose quartz and, as an added bonus, acquires a number of healing properties. Peruvian pink salt is great for grilling as well as adding a touch of flavor to a fresh salad. You can pick it up at any grocery store in Lima.

3. Baby Alpaca

Stay warm during those chilly winter months with some luxurious baby alpaca. You'll find scarves, shawls, sweaters, throws, capes and all kinds of designs. You can find some nice options in the Inka Market on Petit Thouars in Miraflores or more upscale gifts in stores like Kuna and Sol Alpaca.

4. Organic coffee

Skip Starbucks and head straight for the good stuff. While Peru is one of the world's top six producers of the Arabica bean, their true calling is in organic coffee. No one does organic, Peruvian coffee in Lima like Tostaduría Bisetti. They change their blends frequently and handpick the beans daily to roast them in situ. If you make the trek to their Barranco location and get there around 10:00 AM you can watch them in action.

5. Hot Sauce

Spice up your dishes with a new flavor. Put down the Tabasco and try a delicious hot sauce with a slight fruity taste made with charapita peppers from the Peruvian Amazon by Madre Selva. Another option is a range of wonderful hot sauces by Hualla made with a variety of Peruvian chili peppers and packaged perfectly for gifts.

Things to do in Lima that make people fall in love with the city - that's precisely what we're after. We're Lucas and Sam, a Peruvian-American couple who have run the top tour in Lima for the past 14 years. It’s no coincidence that the best activities in Lima have to do with Peru’s amazing cuisine. This Kansas City girl and Lima native have lived all over the world in their corporate past lives but they traded in the daily grind for sharing their love of good food, showing off the city’s secrets and meeting awesome people along the way.
